Entresto Uses

Entresto is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization from heart failure in adult patients with chronic heart failure. The benefits of this medicine are seen maximum in patients with a below-normal left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Entresto is also used to treat symptomatic heart failure with systemic left ventricular systolic dysfunction in children aged 1 year or older.

There may be other uses of this medicine — your healthcare provider or pharmacist can provide medical advice and give you further Entresto drug information.

Entresto Mechanism of Action

Entresto is a combination medication used to treat adults and children with congestive heart failure.

The sacubitril in Entresto works by blocking a protein called neprilysin that breaks down natriuretic peptides. Natriuretic peptides are natural substances that relax the blood vessels and lower blood pressure. By blocking neprilysin, sacubitril helps to prevent the breakdown of natriuretic peptides and thus relax blood vessels and lower blood pressure, reducing the heart's workload.

Valsartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker. It works by blocking a substance called angiotensin II, which causes tightening or narrowing blood vessels. By blocking angiotensin II, valsartan helps to relax blood vessels, improve blood flow, and make it easier for the heart to pump blood to the organs in the body.

Entresto Doses

Entresto is available as a tablet in doses of sacubitril/valsartan 24 mg/26 mg, 49 mg/51 mg, and 97 mg/103 mg. The recommended starting dose of Entresto in adults is 49 mg/51 mg twice daily. If needed, the dose may be increased to a target maintenance dose of 97 mg/103 mg twice daily. In children, the Entresto dose is based on the child’s body weight.
