How To Use Erythromycin

Erythromycin comes in the form of oral dosage forms to be taken by mouth with or without meals every 6-12 hours (2-4 times a day).

Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully. Do not take a bigger or small dose or take the antibiotic more or less frequently than prescribed.

If you are using the oral suspension, shake the bottle well before use. Use the dose measuring device (cup, dropper, or syringe) to measure the dose of liquid medicine accurately (and not a regular household spoon).

Swallow the capsules and tablets whole. Do not cut, crush, or chew them.

Finish taking all the erythromycin oral prescribed by your doctor. Continue taking the antibiotic even if you feel well. Stopping treatment too soon can make your infection come back and become harder to treat in the future.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of erythromycin, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store erythromycin tablets and capsules at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Store E.E.S. (oral liquid) in the refrigerator and discard any unused medicine after 10 days. Store Ery-Ped (oral liquid) at room temperature and discard any unused medicine after 35 days. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused erythromycin should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw erythromycin in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to properly discard expired or unneeded erythromycin is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal
