Farxiga Uses

Farxiga is used, along with diet, exercise, and sometimes other medications, to lower high blood sugar and achieve better glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Farxiga is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

This medication can also reduce the risk of hospitalization for heart failure in patients with diabetes and heart disease. Heart failure is a condition in which there is reduced ejection fraction (reduced ability of the heart to pump blood).

Farxiga has also been approved for use in adults with chronic kidney disease who are at risk of progressing. This medicine helps lower the risk of a fall in eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate), end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization for heart failure. However, Farxiga is not used to treat chronic kidney disease in patients with polycystic kidney disease or those who are taking or recently took immunosuppressive therapy for kidney disease.

There may be other uses of this medicine — your healthcare provider or pharmacist can provide medical advice and give you further Farxiga drug information.

Farxiga Mechanism of Action

Farxiga works by helping the kidneys get rid of more glucose in the urine, thereby reducing blood sugar levels. It also helps prevent sodium reabsorption by the kidneys back into the body, which makes the workload of the heart easier, thereby reducing hospitalization risk in heart failure patients.

Farxiga Doses

Farxiga is available as a tablet in doses of 5 mg and 10 mg. The recommended starting dose of Farxiga is 5 mg once daily by mouth for type 2 diabetes mellitus. The dose may be increased if needed. The maximum dose of Farxiga is 10 mg per day. The Farxiga dose is usually 10 mg once daily by mouth for heart failure.
