Febuxostat (Uloric) Uses

Febuxostat is used for chronic management of gout. This is a condition in which increased uric acid level leads to deposition of urate crystal in the joints, causing a type of arthritis. Febuxostat lowers serum uric acid levels and prevents gout attacks. It is a second-choice medication and treatment options such as allopurinol are used first.

There may be other uses of febuxostat—your pharmacist or health care professional can give you further drug information.

Febuxostat (Uloric) Mechanism of Action

Febuxostat prevents gout flares by reducing the amount of uric acid made in the body and lowering serum uric acid levels.

Febuxostat (Uloric) Doses

Febuxostat is available as 40 mg and 80 mg tablets. The recommended starting dose is 40 mg once daily by mouth. If the serum uric acid level does not fall to below 6 mg/dL after two weeks, the dose may be increased to 80 mg daily.
