Allegra Uses

Allegra is an over-the-counter product (antihistamine) that is used to treat symptoms of upper respiratory allergies (allergic rhinitis or hay fever) such as runny nose, sneezing, itchy nose, watery eyes, itchy eyes, and itchy sensation in the roof of the mouth and throat. Allegra is also used to treat symptoms of an allergic reaction called urticaria  such as rash, itching, and hives or raised areas on the skin.

Allegra Mechanism of Action

Allegra works by blocking a certain natural substance called histamine that the body makes and which causes allergy symptoms.

Allegra Doses

Allegra is available as a 60 mg (12-hour) tablet and a 180 mg (24-hour tablet). It is also available as a 30 mg dissolvable tablet and an oral suspension 30 mg/5 mL.

Allegra dosage in adults and children 12 years of age and older

The usual dose of Allegra is one 12-hour (60 mg) tablet twice a day or one 24-hour (180 mg) tablet once a day.

Allegra dosage in children under 12 years of age

The usual dose of Allegra in children under 12 years of age is one 30 mg rapidly dissolving tablet or 5 mL (30 mg) of the liquid form every 12 hours (twice a day)
