How To Use Flecainide

Flecainide acetate is available as an oral tablet to take by mouth every 12 hours (twice a day). Your doctor may recommend taking the medicine every 8 hours (three times a day) if you have side effects or your condition is not controlled with twice daily dosing. Try to take flecainide at around the same time every day. 

Read the prescription label carefully and take flecainide exactly as prescribed. Do not change the dose or dosage frequency without your doctor’s approval. 

You may need to stay in the hospital for careful monitoring of your heart rhythm when you first start oral flecainide treatment.

Your healthcare provider will likely start you on a low dose of flecainide and gradually increase the dose after 4 days or more. They may try decreasing the dose once your condition is under control. This medication can help to stabilize your heart rhythm but will not cure the underlying condition. Continue taking flecainide even if you feel well. Do not stop taking this medication without talking with your doctor. Doing so may result in worsening of your condition.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of flecainide, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store flecainide at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom, where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired flecainide should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw flecainide in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded flecainide is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program.
