Flovent HFA Pros and Cons

  • Flovent HFA is effective as a maintenance treatment for asthma. It helps to reduce the frequency and severity of asthma attacks.
  • It can be used in children 4 years of age and older.
  • Inhaled steroids such as Flovent HFA (inhaled fluticasone) cause fewer side effects than oral corticosteroid drugs (pills taken by mouth).
  • In addition to the aerosol (Flovent HFA), inhaled fluticasone is available in other dosage forms, such as a fine powder for inhalation (dry powder inhaler) called Flovent Diskus.

  • Flovent HFA is not a rescue medication for acute asthma exacerbations. You cannot use it to treat an asthma attack that has already started.
  • You need to use Flovent HFA (inhaled fluticasone) twice every day regularly.
  • You must rinse your mouth (without swallowing) after each use of Flovent HFA to lower the risk of fungal infections in the mouth and throat.
  • Flovent Diskus contains small amounts of lactose and is not suitable for people with a milk protein allergy.
