How To Use Fluconazole
Fluconazole comes in the form of a tablet or oral suspension (liquid) to be taken by mouth. Take this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Follow the directions on your prescription label. Do not take more or less of the medication or take it more frequently than your doctor prescribes.
Fluconazole is usually taken once a day by mouth. You can take it with or without food.
If you are taking the liquid, use a medicine dose-measuring device such as the dosing syringe provided and not a kitchen spoon. This will ensure accurate dosing. Shake the bottle well before use to mix the medicine properly.
Your doctor may ask you to take a single dose of fluconazole or take this medicine daily for several days or weeks. You may need to take a double dose of fluconazole on the first day of treatment. Follow the directions carefully.
The duration of your treatment with fluconazole will depend on your condition and your response to the medicine. Your doctor may make dose adjustments based on your response.
You will likely feel better after a few days of fluconazole treatment. However, you should finish the course of fluconazole prescribed by your doctor and stop taking it only after the final dose.
Do not stop taking the medicine even if you feel better unless your doctor says so. Stopping fluconazole too soon can cause the infection to come back. Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or get worse while taking fluconazole.
Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of fluconazole, take the medicine as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
Storage: Store fluconazole at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.
Unused medicine: Throw away any expired or unused fluconazole tablets. Dispose of any unused liquid fluconazole after 14 days. Do not flush the medicine down the toilet. The best way to dispose of medicines is through your local waste disposal company or a medication take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
