How To Use Fluocinonide
Fluocinonide comes as a cream, ointment, gel, and solution. It is usually applied to the affected area 1-4 times a day as directed. Read the prescription label carefully and use fluocinonide cream (Vanos) exactly as prescribed.
Apply a thin film of the cream, ointment, gel, or solution to the affected area and rub it in gently. Wash your hands with soap and water afterward to remove any residual medicine and prevent it from getting into your eyes.
Do not use more of the product or apply it on large areas of skin. Also, do not use fluocinonide more frequently than your doctor tells you to. Make sure you do not use the medicine on other areas of your body or for treatment of conditions other than prescribed. Check with your healthcare provider before using other skin products in the area being treated with fluocinonide.
Do not wrap the treated area with a bandage or dressing. If a healthcare provider prescribes this medicine for diaper rash, do not put the baby in plastic pants or tight-fitting diapers.
This topical steroid medicine is for external use only. It is not for application to the eyes, mouth, genital, or rectal areas. Do not use it in sensitive areas such as the face, underarms, or groin unless your doctor tells you to.
Do not use fluocinonide cream for more than 2 weeks without talking to your doctor. Also, do not use more than 60 grams (half of a 120-gram tube) in one week. Do not use fluocinonide to treat perioral dermatitis (a bumpy rash around the mouth) or rosacea (redness and swelling of the face).
If your symptoms do not improve in 2 weeks or you develop swelling, oozing (pus), or burning in the treated area, call your doctor. Do not stop using fluocinonide cream suddenly without talking to your doctor.
Missed dose: If you miss an application of fluocinonide, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and apply the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
Storage: Store fluocinonide at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.
Unused medicine: Unused fluocinonide should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw fluocinonide in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to properly discard expired or unneeded fluocinonide is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
