How should I use furosemide (Lasix)?

Take your medication regularly, exactly as prescribed by your health care professional. Furosemide is usually taken once or twice a day. Take your furosemide tablet or liquid at around the same time every day. If you are taking furosemide to treat edema, you may be advised to take it only on certain days of the week.

Read the prescription label carefully and follow your doctor’s dosing instructions to take furosemide correctly and safely. Furosemide is a strong diuretic and can cause severe fluid and electrolyte imbalance if misused. Do not take more or less of this medicine or take it more or less frequently than prescribed. 

Furosemide will help lower your blood pressure and reduce fluid retention, but it will not treat the underlying condition. Continue taking the medicine even if you feel well. Do not stop taking furosemide without talking to your doctor first. 

Missed dose: If you forget your furosemide dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next scheduled dose at the regular time. Do not double up on the dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store furosemide in the container it came in, tightly closed and away from moisture, heat, and direct light. Keep all over-the-counter and prescription drugs out of reach of children and pets. Discard any unused furosemide oral solution 90 days after opening the bottle.
