How To Use Glipizide
Glipizide oral tablet comes in the form of an immediate-release (regular) tablet to be taken by mouth one or more times a day. You should take the regular glipizide tablet 30 minutes before breakfast or other meals.
Glipizide extended-release tablet is to be taken by mouth once daily in the morning with breakfast or your first meal. Swallow the extended-release tablet whole without cutting, crushing, or chewing it. Try to take your medicine at around the same time(s) every day - this will help you remember to take it.
Read the prescription label and the drug information contained in the patient information leaflet carefully. Take the medicine exactly as prescribed. Do not adjust the dose, change the dosage frequency, or alter the duration of treatment without your doctor’s approval.
Your doctor will likely start you on a low dose of glipizide and gradually increase the dose based on your response and glycemic control. Your body’s response to glipizide can decrease over time, i.e., the medicine may not control your blood sugar levels as well as it did before. Talk with your doctor if you notice your blood sugar levels are not well controlled after being on glipizide for some time. Your doctor may adjust your glipizide dose to help the medicine work better. Follow your doctor’s dosing instructions carefully.
Glipizide helps with blood sugar control, but it does not cure diabetes. Continue taking glipizide even if your blood sugar levels are well controlled. Do not stop taking glipizide without talking to your doctor.
Missed dose: If you miss a dose of glipizide, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
Storage: Store glipizide at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.
Unused medicine: Unused glipizide should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw glipizide in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to properly discard expired or unneeded glipizide is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
