Glipizide Tips from Pharmacists
Take a glipizide extended-release tablet with breakfast or your first main meal of the day. If you skip this meal, then skip taking glipizide too. Take a glipizide immediate-release (regular) tablet 30 minutes before breakfast (or another main meal if you are taking it more than once daily). Taking this medicine on an empty stomach can induce hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
Glipizide can cause dizziness and drowsiness. Avoid driving or doing other hazardous activities until you know how it affects you.
Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen while on glipizide. This medicine can increase the sensitivity of your skin to sunlight.
Avoid drinking alcohol while on glipizide to lower your risk of adverse effects.
Measure your blood sugar levels regularly. Learn to recognize hypoglycemia symptoms such as fast heartbeat, rapid breathing, shakiness, chills, sweating, sleepiness, confusion, anxiety, low energy, and excessive hunger. Talk with your doctor about what to do if you develop low blood sugar levels or if the symptoms feel life-threatening.
This medicine will help to control blood glucose levels, but it will not cure your diabetes. Continue taking glipizide even if you feel well and have well-controlled blood sugar levels.
Glipizide works only if you eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly.
