Glipizide Pros and Cons

  • A glipizide oral tablet is easier to take than an insulin dose, which has to be injected.
  • This medication can significantly lower hemoglobin A1C, fasting blood sugar levels, and postprandial glucose levels (blood sugar levels after meals) in people with mild to severe type 2 diabetes.
  • You only need to take glipizide extended-release once daily.
  • Glipizide is available in a lower-cost generic form.

  • You need to take the glipizide immediate-release tablets 30 minutes before breakfast and the extended-release tablet with breakfast.
  • Taking glipizide can put you at risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), especially if you have hepatic or renal impairment (liver or kidney disease).
  • The effects of glipizide can lessen over time.
  • This drug cannot be used to treat type 1 diabetes mellitus or diabetic ketoacidosis.
