How To Use Glyburide (Micronase)

Glyburide comes in the form of a tablet to be taken by mouth with water. It is usually taken once a day with breakfast or the first meal of the day. You can also take it with the largest meal of the day. Your doctor may tell you to take glyburide twice a day. 

Try to take your medicine at around the same time every day. This will help you remember to take it.

Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully. Do not take more or less glyburide or take it more or less frequently than prescribed.

Your doctor may recommend you administer maintenance dose glyburide once you have normalized glycemic control. The initial dose may be lower and your doctor may ask you to increase glyburide dose weekly when you first start taking this medicine. 

Dosing considerations for the maintenance dosing of glyburide include your current insulin dose. You may be able to decrease insulin dose gradually while on maintenance doses of glyburide. 

Over time, you may notice a difference in how tightly glucose levels are controlled on glyburide. Tell your doctor if you notice high blood sugar levels while on this medicine. Your doctor may prescribe higher doses of glyburide to achieve tighter glycemic control. 

Keep in mind that while glyburide may help with blood sugar control, it will not cure your diabetes. Continue taking glyburide even if you feel well and have normal blood sugar levels. Do not stop taking glyburide without talking to your healthcare professional.

Missed dose: Talk to your doctor about what to do if you miss a glyburide dose. If you forget to take a dose of glyburide, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regularly scheduled time. Do not take two doses of glyburide to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store glyburide at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Throw away any expired or unused glyburide. Do not flush the medicine down the toilet. The best way to dispose of medicines is through your local waste disposal company or a medication take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
