How To Use Guaifenesin
Guaifenesin is available in the form of a tablet, extended-release tablet, capsule, dissolvable granules, and oral solution. The tablet, capsule, dissolvable granules, and liquid are usually taken every 4 hours as needed. The extended-release tablets are taken every 12 hours. You can take this medicine with or without food.
Read the package instructions and follow the dosage directions carefully. Do not take more guaifenesin or take it more frequently than indicated on the package.
Remember that guaifenesin is present in many combination products used to treat the common cold, cough, sore throat, and flu. If you are self-treating, check the labels of your cold medicine before using two or more products with the same or similar ingredients. Make sure you do not exceed the maximum recommended dose of guaifenesin.
Guaifenesin is not approved for use in children younger than 4 years of age. This medicine can cause breathing difficulties and even death in very young children. Use guaifenesin carefully in children younger than 11 years of age. Do not give adult guaifenesin products to children.
If you are using liquid guaifenesin, use the dose-measuring spoon or cup that came with the medicine. Do not use a household spoon to measure the dose.
If you are taking the extended-release tablets, swallow the tablets with a full glass of water. Do not crush, break, or chew the extended-release tablets.
The dissolving granules should be emptied directly from the packet onto the tongue and swallowed.
Guaifenesin will provide symptomatic relief but will not cure your condition. If you do not get relief from congestion and cough and cold symptoms after 7 days, contact your health care professional.
Missed dose: Guaifenesin is usually taken when needed. If you miss a dose of guaifenesin, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.
Storage: Store at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.
Unused medicine: Unused guaifenesin should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot consume them. Do not flush medications down the toilet. The best way to properly discard expired or unneeded medications is through a drug take-back program or through your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
