How To Use Guanfacine ER (Intuniv)

Guanfacine extended release tablets should be taken by mouth once a day at bedtime. Try to take the medication at around the same time every day. Do not cut, crush, or chew the extended release tablet. Do not take this medicine with high-fat meals as this can lead to an increased absorption of the medicine.

Read the prescription label and follow the dosing instructions carefully. Do not change the dose or dosing frequency without your doctor’s approval.

Your healthcare provider may start you on a lower dose of guanfacine ER and increase the dose at weekly intervals if needed. It typically takes 2 weeks to get the full benefits of this ADHD medicine. Guanfacine ER helps with symptom improvement but does not cure the underlying condition. Continue taking the medicine even if you feel well. Do not suddenly stop taking guanfacine ER without consulting your healthcare provider. Doing so can lead to an increase in your systolic and diastolic blood pressure, anxiety, and nervousness. Your doctor will tell you how to lower the dose gradually.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of guanfacine extended release, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose. If you miss two or more doses of guanfacine ER, call your doctor for instructions.

Storage: Store guanfacine ER at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused guanfacine ER should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw guanfacine ER in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded guanfacine ER is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal
