Guanfacine ER (Intuniv) Tips from Pharmacists

  • Do not substitute the ER tablets for the regular (immediate-release) tablets. These formulations work differently and are used to treat different conditions.

  • Do not cut, crush, or chew guanfacine ER tablets. This can cause more of the medicine to be released at once and increase the risk of adverse effects.

  • You can take guanfacine ER in the morning or night. If it causes drowsiness, taking it at night might help.

  • Do not take guanfacine ER with a high-fat meal. This can affect the absorption of the medicine.

  • Guanfacine ER can make you dizzy and lightheaded. These side effects usually get better after a few days once your body gets used to the medicine. Do not drive or do other hazardous activities until you know how guanfacine ER affects you. Get up slowly out of bed to prevent falls.

  • Do not stop taking guanfacine ER suddenly. This can cause withdrawal effects like an increase in blood pressure, nervousness, and anxiety.
