Guanfacine ER (Intuniv) Uses

Guanfacine extended-release is a non-stimulant prescription medication used for treating ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) in children 6-12 years of age and adolescents 13-17 years of age. It helps to control ADHD symptoms such as impulsivity, hyperactivity, and problems with attention. Unlike stimulant medications, guanfacine ER is not a controlled substance. It can be used alone or in combination with stimulant therapy. Guanfacine ER is used as part of a total treatment program for ADHD, which includes behavior therapy, counseling, and medications.

The immediate release form of guanfacine hydrochloride (brand name Tenex) is used to treat high blood pressure. The ER form is for ADHD and is not used to lower blood pressure.

There may be other uses of guanfacine ER—your doctor or health system pharmacists can give you further drug information.

Guanfacine ER (Intuniv) Mechanism of Action

It is unclear exactly how guanfacine extended release helps with ADHD but it acts on parts of the brain that control impulsivity and attention.
