Hydralazine Uses

Hydralazine is used to treat high blood pressure (essential hypertension). By controlling blood pressure, this medicine helps to lower the risk of stroke, coronary artery disease, heart attack, heart failure, vision loss, kidney failure, and other serious health problems.

There may be other uses of hydralazine, such as to treat heart failure and after heart valve replacement—your pharmacist or doctor can give you further drug information.

Hydralazine Mechanism of Action

Hydralazine is a vasodilator. It works by relaxing blood vessels and making blood flow easier, thus lowering blood pressure.

Hydralazine Doses

Hydralazine is available as a 10 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg oral tablet.

The usual starting dose is 10 mg four times a day for 2-4 days. This is increased to 25 mg four times a day for the rest of the week. From the second week onwards, the dose of hydralazine is 50 mg four times a day. The maintenance dose is adjusted based on individual response.
