How should I take Hydrochlorothiazide?

Hydrochlorothiazide comes in the form of a tablet or capsule to be taken by mouth with water. Take this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Follow the directions on your prescription label. Do not take more or less of the medication or take it more or less frequently than prescribed by your doctor.

If you are taking hydrochlorothiazide for edema, your doctor may prescribe intermittent therapy (they may ask you to take the medicine only on certain days of the week). Follow these directions carefully. 

You should know that hydrochlorothiazide will help to control high blood pressure but will not cure the condition. Do not stop taking hydrochlorothiazide even if you feel well. Talk to your doctor before discontinuing this medicine.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a hydrochlorothiazide oral tablet or capsule, take the medicine as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store hydrochlorothiazide in a tightly closed container at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Throw away any expired or unused hydrochlorothiazide tablets and capsules. Do not flush the medicine down the toilet. The best way to dispose of medicines is through your local waste disposal company or a medication take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
