What are Hydrochlorothiazide side effects?

Some of the common side effects of hydrochlorothiazide are listed below. Tell your doctor if these adverse effects are severe or do not go away after a few days.

  • Frequent urination
  • Dizziness
  • Low blood pressure
  • Low potassium levels
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Hair loss

Some of the adverse effects of hydrochlorothiazide are more serious. Tell your doctor right away or seek emergency medical help if you experience:

  • Signs and symptoms of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance such as excessive thirst, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, tiredness, weakness, drowsiness, confusion, restlessness, muscle weakness, muscle cramps, or fast heartbeat
  • Signs and symptoms of allergic reactions such as hives, rash, itching, skin blisters, and skin peeling
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding
  • Fever, chills, sore throat, and other signs of infection
  • Persistent stomach pain that may spread to the back
  • Joint swelling or pain
  • Swelling around the eyes, redness, or changes in vision

Hydrochlorothiazide Overdose: In case of a known or suspected overdose, immediately call your doctor or the local poison control center. If the person can’t be awakened, has had a seizure, or has trouble breathing, call 911.
