Hydroxychloroquine Tips from Pharmacists

  • Hydroxychloroquine can cause gastrointestinal side effects like nausea, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. Taking the medicine with milk can help to reduce these side effects.

  • It can take several weeks, even months, to get the full benefits of hydroxychloroquine. Tell your doctor if you don’t notice any improvement in your rheumatoid arthritis or lupus symptoms. Do not stop taking hydroxychloroquine without talking to your doctor first.

  • If you are taking antacids, take them 4 hours away from hydroxychloroquine. If you are on ampicillin, take it 2 hours away from hydroxychloroquine.

  • Hydroxychloroquine can increase the light sensitivity of your skin. Wear sunblock and protect yourself with a hat, long-sleeved shirts, and trousers.

  • Hydroxychloroquine is broken down in the body by the liver. Avoid drinking alcohol while on this medication as it can increase your risk of liver problems.
