How To Use Imipramine

To treat depression, imipramine tablets and capsules are taken one or more times a day by mouth. This medicine can be taken with or without food. Taking the medicine at around the same time every day makes it easier to remember.

When it is used to prevent bedwetting in children, imipramine is taken one hour before bedtime. If a child wets the bed early in the evening, one dose may be given in the afternoon and another dose before bedtime.

To take imipramine safely, read the prescription label and patient information carefully. Do not adjust the dose, dosage frequency, or the duration of treatment without your doctor’s approval.

Your doctor may start you on a low dose of imipramine and gradually increase the dose based on your response and side effects. Do not stop taking imipramine suddenly. If you wish to stop taking this medicine, your doctor will tell you how to lower the dose slowly.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of imipramine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store imipramine at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused imipramine should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw imipramine in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to properly discard expired or unneeded imipramine is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal
