Imipramine Side Effects

Possible side effects of imipramine are listed below. Call your doctor if they are severe or persist after a few days.

• Drowsiness
• Weakness
• Tiredness
• Nausea
• Dry mouth
• Abnormal excitement or increased anxiety
• Nightmares
• Increased sensitivity of the skin to UV rays
• Decreased or increased appetite and weight changes
• Urinary frequency and urinary retention
• Constipation
• Changes in libido 
• Excessive sweating

Rarely, imipramine can cause more serious side effects. Call your doctor right away or seek emergency medical attention if you develop the following signs and symptoms:

• Muscle spasms in the jaw, neck, or back
• Slowness or difficulty with speech
• Shuffling gait
• Uncontrolled shaking in some part of the body
• Signs of infection such as fever, chills, sore throat
• Severe skin rash
• Difficulty breathing or swallowing
• Irregular heartbeat
• Yellowing of the skin or eyes

The above list may not include all the potential side effects of imipramine. Contact your healthcare provider if your side effects are unusual or severe or if they do not get better over time. You can also report unusual side effects to the Food and Drug Administration at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Imipramine Overdose: In case of an overdose of imipramine, call your doctor immediately. You can also call the national poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Call 911 or emergency services if a person has collapsed, cannot breathe, has had a seizure, or cannot be awakened.
