Imipramine Side Effects

Possible side effects of imipramine are listed below. Call your doctor if they are severe or persist after a few days.

  • Drowsiness
  • Weakness
  • Tiredness
  • Nausea
  • Dry mouth
  • Abnormal excitement or increased anxiety
  • Nightmares
  • Increased sensitivity of the skin to UV rays
  • Decreased or increased appetite and weight changes
  • Urinary frequency and urinary retention
  • Constipation
  • Changes in libido 
  • Excessive sweating

Rarely, imipramine can cause more serious side effects. Call your doctor right away or seek emergency medical attention if you develop the following signs and symptoms:

  • Muscle spasms in the jaw, neck, or back
  • Slowness or difficulty with speech
  • Shuffling gait
  • Uncontrolled shaking in some part of the body
  • Signs of infection such as fever, chills, sore throat
  • Severe skin rash
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes

Imipramine Overdose: In case of an overdose of imipramine, call your doctor immediately. You can also call the national poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Call 911 or emergency services if a person has collapsed, cannot breathe, has had a seizure, or cannot be awakened.
