How To Use Ipratropium Bromide

Ipratropium bromide comes as a solution to inhale by mouth using a nebulizer or inhaler, 3-4 times a day as prescribed.

The nebulizer machine turns the medicine into a fine mist that you inhale with the help of a mouthpiece.

The inhaler dispenses a fixed dose of the medicine and has a certain number of actuations (inhalations). Keep track of how many doses you have used up and discard the inhaler after this time, even if there is some medicine remaining (any remaining inhalations may not contain the correct amount of medicine). There is an indicator near the mouthpiece that tells you how many actuations (puffs) remain.

Read the prescription label carefully and take ipratropium bromide exactly as prescribed.

Tell your doctor if you experience symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, trouble breathing, or chest tightness or if you need more doses to control your symptoms. Your doctor may increase your dose or switch you to a different medicine. Do not change the dose or dosing frequency without consulting your doctor.

Avoid getting ipratropium bromide into your eyes, as this can increase your risk of developing a serious eye condition called narrow-angle glaucoma or acute angle closure glaucoma. People who have narrow-angle glaucoma may have worsening of the condition if the eyes are exposed to ipratropium. If you are using a face mask with your nebulizer, make sure you know how to prevent the medicine from leaking and getting into your eyes. Tell your doctor immediately if you develop eye pain, redness, vision changes such as blurred vision, or see halos around lights.

Do not use other inhalers for ipratropium or ipratropium inhalers for other medicines. Use only the inhaler that comes with ipratropium. Do not use your inhaler near flames or heat sources, as this can cause it to explode.

Your doctor, pharmacist, or respiratory therapist will show you the proper use of the inhaler and nebulizer. You can also refer to the patient information leaflet and manufacturer’s directions that came with your medicine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain the instructions if you don’t understand.

To get the full benefits of ipratropium bromide, use the medicine regularly. This medication will control your symptoms, improve pulmonary function, and make breathing easier, but it will not cure your condition. Do not stop using ipratropium bromide without talking to your doctor. If you stop using the medicine, your symptoms may get worse.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of ipratropium bromide, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store ipratropium bromide at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Keep unused vials of the solution in the foil pack until it’s time to use them. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused ipratropium bromide should be disposed of in a way that other people, children, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw ipratropium bromide in the trash or flush it down the toilet. Do not puncture the inhaler canister or discard the inhaler in a fire or incinerator. The best way to properly discard expired or unneeded ipratropium bromide is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal
