How To Use Isosorbide Mononitrate

Isosorbide mononitrate regular tablets are taken by mouth 2-3 times a day. The extended-release tablets and capsules are taken once a day.

Read the medicine label carefully and take it exactly as advised. Do not increase or decrease the dose, change the dosing frequency or timing, or stop taking the medicine without talking to your doctor. This medicine can prevent chest pain but does not treat your underlying condition.

Swallow the extended-release forms (tablets and capsules) whole. Do not cut, crush, or chew them.

Isosorbide mononitrate can become less effective after you have been taking it for some time. Tell your doctor if your chest pain episodes are more severe, longer lasting, or more frequent. Your doctor may change your dose or dosing frequency or timing so that your body has a drug-free period for some time every day to increase the efficacy of the medicine.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of isosorbide mononitrate, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a second dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store isosorbide mononitrate at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused isosorbide mononitrate should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw isosorbide mononitrate in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to properly discard expired or unneeded isosorbide mononitrate is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal
