Uses

Isotretinoin (Absorica) Uses

Isotretinoin is used to treat severe nodular acne that has been unresponsive to other treatments such as antibiotics.

There may be other uses of isotretinoin, such as to treat certain skin conditions and some cancers—your pharmacist or doctor can give you further drug information.

Isotretinoin (Absorica) Mechanism of Action

Isotretinoin slows the function of sebaceous glands in the skin that produce sebum, an oily substance that causes acne.

Isotretinoin (Absorica) Doses

Absorica (isotretinoin) capsules are available in strengths of 10 mg, 20 mg, 25 mg, 30 mg, 35 mg, and 40 mg. Absorica LD (isotretinoin) capsules are available in strengths of 8 mg, 16 mg, 20 mg, 24 mg, 28 mg, and 30 mg. These two formulations have different bioavailability and are not interchangeable.

The recommended dosage is as follows:

  • Absorica LD 0.4 to 0.8 mg/kg/day in two divided doses for 15-20 weeks.

Note: Doses up to 2 mg/kg/day of Absorica and 1.6 mg/kg/day of Absorica LD in divided doses have been used in adult patients with very severe acne that is primarily present on the trunk and is associated with scarring.
