Itraconazole Tips from Pharmacists

  • Continue taking itraconazole for the duration prescribed, even if you don’t have symptoms. Stopping treatment too soon may cause your fungal infection to come back.

  • Take itraconazole oral capsules with a full meal because food helps with the absorption of the drug.

  • Take itraconazole oral solution on an empty stomach. Swish the oral solution in your mouth for a few seconds before swallowing the medicine. Use only the oral solution to treat oral thrush (oropharyngeal candidiasis) and esophageal candidiasis.

  • Do not substitute the different formulations of itraconazole (oral capsules and oral solution). They are not interchangeable. Use only the formulation that is prescribed.

  • If you take a stomach acid reducer, make sure you take it at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after your itraconazole dose. Follow your doctor’s dosing instructions carefully and take itraconazole with a cola drink or citrus fruit juice if asked to do so.
