How To Use Ivermectin (Stromectol)

Take ivermectin tablets by mouth on an empty stomach with a full glass of water. If you have strongyloidiasis, your healthcare provider will order stool exams at least 3 times in the 3 months following your treatment with ivermectin to check if your infection has cleared. You may need to take additional doses if the infection persists. If you have onchocerciasis, you may need to take additional doses of ivermectin every 3, 6, or 12 months for several years.

Read the prescription label carefully and take ivermectin exactly as your doctor directed. Do not take a larger or smaller dose than prescribed. Follow your doctor’s instructions for the next dose of ivermectin, if required.

Missed dose: Ivermectin treatment consists of one dose. Additional doses may be necessary for onchocerciasis or persistent strongyloidiasis. Tell your doctor if you do not take the recommended dose of ivermectin.

Storage: Store ivermectin between 15-30° C or 59-86° F (at room temperature) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused ivermectin should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot consume them. Do not flush ivermectin down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded ivermectin is through a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
