Janumet Uses

Janumet, along with diet and exercise, is used to lower high blood sugar and achieve better glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Janumet is not used to treat patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

There may be other uses of this medicine — your healthcare provider or pharmacist can provide medical advice and give you further Janumet drug information.

Janumet Mechanism of Action

Janumet contains two medications - sitagliptin and metformin. Sitagliptin works by increasing the amount of insulin made by the body. Metformin lowers the amount of glucose released by the liver into the blood and improves insulin responsiveness.

Janumet Doses

Janumet is available as a tablet in doses of 50 mg/500 mg and 50 mg/1,000 mg of sitagliptin and metformin, respectively. The usual dose of Janumet is 50 mg/1,000 mg twice daily with meals. Patients taking Janumet XR tablets (an extended-release formulation) only need to take the medicine once daily.

The maximum recommended daily dose is 100 mg sitagliptin and 2,000 mg metformin. Your doctor may start you on a lower dose and gradually increase the dose to reduce gastrointestinal adverse reactions.
