Ketoconazole Tips from Pharmacists

  • For dandruff, use non-prescription ketoconazole shampoo instead of your regular shampoo. Proper use involves leaving it in for 5 minutes before rinsing. Wash your hair thoroughly with water after you shampoo. You should notice an improvement in dandruff after 2-4 weeks of use.

  • Symptoms of your skin problem, such as itching, should stop after a single application of ketoconazole for pityriasis. Tell your doctor if you still have itching. Keep in mind that skin color changes can take several weeks to go away after the infection process.

  • Wash and dry your hands before using Xolegel. Do not wash the treated area for at least 3 hours after application of the medicine. Wait 15-20 minutes before applying makeup or sunscreen.

  • You should only use Xolegel for a maximum of 2 weeks. Contact your doctor if your symptoms are still present after this period of time.

  • Xolegel is not approved for use in people with weakened immune systems. Talk to your doctor about other options if this is the case.

  • Extina (ketoconazole foam) is more likely to cause adverse reactions compared to other forms of the medicine. Contact your healthcare provider if you develop a skin rash, hives, or swelling.

  • The topical form of ketoconazole is for external use only. Do not apply it to any mucous membranes like the eyes, nose, mouth, or vagina. If the medicine gets into one of these orifices, wash thoroughly with water.

  • This medicine has not been studied for safety in pregnant and breast feeding women. Talk to your doctor before using it if you are pregnant. Do not apply the medicine to your nipples or areolas if you are breastfeeding.

  • The foam and gel products are flammable. Keep them away from open flames, fires, and other sources of heat.
