Ketoconazole Uses
The topical forms of ketoconazole are used to treat yeast infections such as dandruff, tinea versicolor (pityriasis), and seborrheic dermatitis. Ketoconazole cream is used to treat fungal infections like athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris) and tinea corporis (ringworm of the body). Oral ketoconazole treatment is used for serious fungal infections that have not responded to other therapies.
There may be other uses of ketoconazole. Your doctor or pharmacist can give you further ketoconazole drug information.
Ketoconazole Mechanism of Action
Ketoconazole works by slowing the growth of the fungus causing an infection.
Ketoconazole Doses
Prescription ketoconazole is available as a 2% shampoo (Nizoral), 2% gel (Xolegel), and 2% foam (Extina). OTC ketoconazole shampoo is available to treat dandruff (Nizoral A-D). These products should be applied to the area affected by a fungal skin infection.
