Lactulose Tips from Pharmacists

  • Measure lactulose solution with a dose-measuring cup or syringe. Do not use a household spoon—this can result in wrong dosing.

  • If you find the taste of lactulose too sweet, try mixing it in fruit juice, milk, or water.

  • Lactulose can cause loose bowel movements and put you at risk of dehydration. Stay well hydrated while on this medication.

  • Tell your doctor if you are lactose intolerant. Lactulose is a milk sugar and may cause stomach cramps, bloating, and diarrhea in people with lactose intolerance.

  • Avoid taking antacids like Mylanta and Tums at the same time as lactulose. They can decrease the effectiveness of lactulose.

  • Eat a high-fiber diet, drink plenty of water, and get regular exercise. These are natural remedies for constipation and can help to reduce your need for laxatives.
