Lactulose Tips from Pharmacists
Measure lactulose solution with a dose-measuring cup or syringe. Do not use a household spoon—this can result in wrong dosing.
If you find the taste of lactulose too sweet, try mixing it in fruit juice, milk, or water.
Lactulose can cause loose bowel movements and put you at risk of dehydration. Stay well hydrated while on this medication.
Tell your doctor if you are lactose intolerant. Lactulose is a milk sugar and may cause stomach cramps, bloating, and diarrhea in people with lactose intolerance.
Avoid taking antacids like Mylanta and Tums at the same time as lactulose. They can decrease the effectiveness of lactulose.
Eat a high-fiber diet, drink plenty of water, and get regular exercise. These are natural remedies for constipation and can help to reduce your need for laxatives.
