How To Use Lansoprazole

Lansoprazole is available as a delayed-release capsule and orally disintegrating tablet. You should take lansoprazole once a day by mouth on an empty stomach (at least 30 minutes before a meal).

If you are taking lansoprazole for H. pylori as part of dual therapy or triple therapy, you may need to take the medicines 2-3 times a day before meals for 10-14 days.

Take your lansoprazole at around the same time every day. Read the prescription label or package instructions carefully. Take lansoprazole exactly as instructed by your doctor or indicated on the package. Do not take a higher or lower dose of this medicine or take it more or less frequently.

Swallow the prescription medicine whole with water. Do not chew, split, or crush the delayed-release / orally disintegrating capsules or tablets.

If you have difficulty swallowing capsules, you may open a Prevacid capsule and mix the granules with applesauce, yogurt, cottage cheese, fruit juice, etc. Swallow immediately (do not store for use later). If you mix the medicine with juice, rinse the glass with a little bit of water and drink it to make sure you swallow all the medicine.

Place the orally disintegrating tablet on your tongue and allow it to dissolve. You can then swallow it with water or saliva. If you have trouble swallowing the tablet, you can place it in an oral syringe and mix it with a little water (4 mL for the 15 mg tablet or 10 mL for the 30 mg tablet). Once the tablet dissolves, you should squirt the contents into your mouth. Rinse the oral syringe with some water and squirt it into your mouth again to ensure you swallow all the medicine. Consume the dissolved mixture within 15 minutes.

If you are taking over-the-counter (non-prescription) lansoprazole for heartburn relief, you should know that, unlike antacids, it will not provide immediate relief. It can take 1-4 days to get the full benefit of lansoprazole. Tell your doctor if you do not get relief, or your symptoms get worse. Do not take OTC lansoprazole for more than 14 days or more often than once every 4 months without talking to your healthcare professional. Heartburn and upset stomach can be signs of something more serious like stomach cancer. You should be evaluated by a healthcare professional if your symptoms do not go away after 2 weeks.

Continue taking prescription lansoprazole even if you don’t have any symptoms. Talk to your doctor before stopping prescription lansoprazole.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of lansoprazole, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store lansoprazole at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom, where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired lansoprazole should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw lansoprazole in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded lansoprazole is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
