How To Use Lantus
Insulin glargine is an injection solution (liquid). You need to administer Lantus subcutaneously (inject the medicine under the skin surface) once a day. Take your Lantus dose at the same time every day.
Check the insulin label and ensure the pharmacy gave you the right kind of insulin to avoid medication errors.
Read the prescription label carefully and follow your doctor’s dosing instructions. Use insulin glargine exactly as directed. Do not change the dose or dosing frequency without your doctor’s approval. Your doctor will prescribe an individualized dose of insulin glargine (Lantus) based on various factors.
Visually inspect the injection solution. Only use the medicine if it is clear and colorless and without any visible particles.
The medicine should be injected into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm area. Rotate between injection sites to avoid localized cutaneous amyloidosis (buildup of amyloid protein in the skin) and lipodystrophy (destruction of fat tissue) at the injection sites. Avoid injecting insulin in the same area more often than once every 1-2 weeks. Do not inject insulin in areas where the skin is tender, painful, bruised, hard, scaly, scarred, lumpy, or damaged.
Insulin glargine comes in a vial. Talk to your doctor about other supplies you will need to inject the medicine, such as needles and syringes. Ask your doctor or pharmacist what type of syringe to use and how to inject Lantus subcutaneously. Do not reuse or share needles and syringes with others. If you are using Lantus SoloStar (insulin pen), use a new needle for each injection. Do not share the insulin pen with others even if you change the needle.
Do not dilute or mix insulin glargine with other insulins. Lantus (insulin glargine) should not be used with an insulin pump and should not be injected intravenously (into a vein).
Do not use Lantus (insulin glargine) or other insulins if you have hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) based on blood glucose monitoring results or symptoms of low blood sugar. Closely monitor glucose levels to prevent hypoglycemia and identify it early if it occurs.
Lantus (insulin glargine) can help to control blood sugar levels but will not cure your diabetes. Continue using Lantus even if you feel well. Do not stop treatment or change your insulin dose without talking to your doctor. Also, do not switch to another type or brand of insulin without consulting your doctor.
