Lantus Side Effects
Possible side effects of Lantus are listed below. Call your doctor if the adverse effects are severe or persistent.
- Injection site reactions (redness, pain, swelling, or itching)
- Thickening or depression in the skin due to fat buildup or fat breakdown at the injection site
- Signs of an upper respiratory tract infection (fever, cough, sore throat)
Some of the side effects of Lantus can be more serious. Call your doctor right away or seek emergency medical attention if you develop the following signs and symptoms:
- Allergic reaction (skin rash, hives, itching)
- Swelling of the face, eyes, lips, tongue, or throat
- Hoarseness
- Wheezing
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Rapid or abnormal heartbeat
- Muscle cramps
- Sweating
- Weakness
- Sudden weight gain
- Swelling in the ankles or feet
- Changes in vision
The above list may not include all the potential side effects of Lantus (insulin glargine). Contact your healthcare provider if the adverse reactions are unusual or severe or they do not get better over time. You can also report unusual side effects to the Food and Drug Administration at 1-800-FDA-1088.
Lantus Overdose: In case of an overdose of insulin glargine, call your doctor immediately. You can also call your local poison control center or the national poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
An overdose of Lantus (insulin glargine) can occur if you take high doses of the medicine or if you take the correct dose but eat less or exercise more than usual. An overdose of insulin glargine can result in low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and symptoms such as loss of consciousness and convulsions. Talk to your doctor about what to do if you develop low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and follow these instructions, if needed.
