Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol Uses

Levonorgestrel - ethinyl estradiol is used to prevent pregnancy.

There may be other uses of ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel. Your healthcare professionals can give you further drug information.

Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol Mechanism of Action

Levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol prevent pregnancy by suppressing ovulation (preventing the release of an egg from the ovary), causing changes in the cervical mucus to make it more difficult for sperm to enter the uterus, and changing the endometrium (lining of the uterus) to reduce the chances of implantation of a fertilized egg.

Note that taking oral contraceptives does not prevent chlamydia, gonorrhea, and other sexually transmitted diseases like HIV.
