Lorazepam (Ativan) tips from pharmacists

  • If you or someone in your family takes lorazepam or any benzodiazepine, those most around you need to be informed of the signs and symptoms of respiratory depression as stated above in previous sections. Seek emergency medical care if one of these symptoms occurs.

  • Avoid alcohol and illicit drugs - taking lorazepam with them can cause dangerous interactions.

  • You should avoid driving, operating hazardous machinery, or performing any activities that require mental alertness until you know how your body reacts to this medication to avoid falling or accidental injury.

  • The oral form of lorazepam is highly concentrated 2 mg/mL. You should use the medicine dropper to measure the exact amount prescribed to you. It is highly recommended to mix the liquid lorazepam with a small amount of water, juice, applesauce, or pudding. Eat or drink the mixture after it is mixed. You should not save it for later use.

  • Let your doctor know if you have any changes in mood or behavior. Seek emergency medical attention if you have thoughts of hurting yourself.

  • You should talk to your healthcare provider before you stop taking lorazepam. This can help avoid serious withdrawal symptoms, especially if you have been taking it for a long time. Your doctor will decrease your lorazepam dose gradually.
