How To Use Loteprednol (Lotemax)

Read the prescription label carefully and use loteprednol as directed by your doctor. Do not change the dose or dosing frequency without your doctor’s approval.

Make sure you don’t touch the tube or bottle tip to any surface, including your eye or finger. This can lead to contamination and cause eye infections and serious eye damage, including vision loss.

To instill the gel or eye drops:

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water.
  2. Shake the suspension well for 3 seconds. Turn the bottle of gel upside down once and shake well.
  3. Ensure that the bottle tip is not damaged.
  4. Do not touch the tip to any surface, including your finger or eye.
  5. Tilt your head backward, gently pull your lid down, and form a small pocket with your index finger. Place your other fingers on your face for support.
  6. Look up and drop the suspension or gel into the pocket without touching the eye.
  7. Keep the eye closed for 2-3 minutes with your head bent toward the floor. Avoid blinking or squeezing your eyelid.
  8. Apply gentle pressure on the inner corner of the eye.
  9. Replace the cap on the bottle. Do not rinse or wipe the dropper tip.
  10. Wipe excess gel or liquid with a tissue.
  11. Wait at least 5 minutes before using any other eye drops.

To use the eye ointment:

  1. Follow the above instructions for washing your hands and forming a pocket by pulling your lower eyelid down.
  2. Ask someone else to apply the ointment for you or stand in front of a mirror.
  3. Do not touch the tip of the tube to any surface.
  4. Place a 1/2-inch or 1.25-cm ribbon of ointment in the pocket (or the amount prescribed by your doctor).

Missed dose: If you forget a dose of loteprednol, use it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and use the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store the closed bottle or tube of loteprednol at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not freeze the medicine. Do not store medications in the bathroom, where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired loteprednol should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw loteprednol in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded loteprednol is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program.
