Loteprednol (Lotemax) Uses

Loteprednol is used to treat postoperative pain and swelling after cataract surgery. It is also used to treat pain, swelling, redness, and inflammation caused by allergic conjunctivitis. Other uses of loteprednol include the treatment of dry eye disease. It is also prescribed for certain inflammatory eye conditions such as anterior chamber inflammation, ocular rosacea, superficial punctate keratitis, herpes zoster keratitis, iritis, cyclitis, and selected infective conjunctivitis.

Loteprednol (Lotemax) Mechanism of Action

Loteprednol is a corticosteroid. It works by preventing the release of natural substances in the body that cause an inflammatory response (eye pain, redness, itching, and corneal edema or swelling).

Loteprednol (Lotemax) Doses

Loteprednol is available as a suspension, gel, and ointment to be instilled or applied to the eye. The usual dose is as follows:

For eye pain and swelling after ocular surgery (for 2 weeks, starting on the day after surgery)

  • Loteprednol 1% suspension (Inveltys) 2 times a day. 
  • Loteprednol 0.38% gel (Lotemax SM) 3 times a day. 
  • Loteprednol (Lotemax) 0.5% eye drops, eye gel, and eye ointment 4 times a day.

To treat seasonal allergies:

  • Loteprednol 0.2% eye drops (Alrex) 4 times a day in the affected eye(s).

To reduce eye inflammation:

  • Loteprednol 0.5% eye drops (Lotemax) 4 times a day in the affected eye(s) (your healthcare provider may recommend more frequent dosing for one week when first starting treatment).

For treatment of dry eye:

  • Loteprednol 0.25% (Eysuvis) eye drops 4 times daily in the affected eye(s) for 2 weeks.
