How To Use Mesalamine (Lialda)
Mesalamine comes in the form of extended release and delayed release tablets and capsules to take by mouth 1-4 times a day. Some formulations of the medicine are taken on an empty stomach, some with food, and others can be taken with or without food.
Read the prescription label carefully and take mesalamine exactly as prescribed. Do not change the dose or dosing frequency without your doctor’s approval. Make sure you understand how to take the medicine, with or without food, as this can affect how well they work.
Swallow Lialda tablets whole. Do not cut, crush, or chew them. Be careful not to damage the protective covering on the tablet (delayed release).
If you find it difficult to swallow tablets, you can sprinkle the contents of the extended-release capsules (Pentasa) on some yogurt or applesauce. Swallow this mixture immediately without chewing. You can also open the delayed-release capsules (Delzicol) and swallow the contents without chewing, followed by a glass of water.
Drink plenty of water while on this medicine. Finish your prescription of mesalamine even if you start feeling better after starting treatment.
Missed dose: If you miss a dose of mesalamine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
Storage: Store mesalamine at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.
Unused medicine: Unused and expired mesalamine should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to it. Do not throw mesalamine in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded mesalamine is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
