Mesalamine (Lialda) Tips from Pharmacists

  • Keep all your medical and laboratory appointments while on mesalamine. Your healthcare provider may want to see how the medicine is working and monitor you for adverse effects.

  • Mesalamine can increase your risk of kidney stone formation. Drink plenty of water and stay well hydrated while on this drug.

  • Taking Lialda (mesalamine) can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid unnecessary sun exposure and wear sunscreen and protective clothing to prevent sunburn.

  • Call your doctor immediately if you develop stomach pain, cramps, bloody diarrhea, fever, headache, or rash. This may be acute intolerance syndrome and can resemble worsening ulcerative colitis.

  • Tell all your doctors and laboratory personnel you are taking Lialda tablets (mesalamine). This medicine can interfere with the results of some tests.
