Uses

Metaxalone (Skelaxin) Uses

Metaxalone is used, along with rest, physical therapy, and other pain relief measures, as part of a complete treatment program for acute painful musculoskeletal conditions such as muscle spasms, strains, sprains, and other muscle injuries.

There may be other uses of metaxalone—your doctor or pharmacist can give you further drug information.

Metaxalone (Skelaxin) Mechanism of Action

It is not known exactly how metaxalone helps to relieve muscular pain. The relief in pain sensations obtained from this medication in people with skeletal muscle conditions is believed to be due to its sedative effects. Metaxalone is not involved in blocking nerve impulses or relaxing skeletal muscles directly.

Metaxalone (Skelaxin) Doses

Metaxalone is available as an 800-mg tablet. The usual dose of metaxalone in adults and children 12 years of age and older is 800 mg 3-4 times a day.
