Methylphenidate HCl Uses

Methylphenidate is a stimulant medication that is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), also called attention deficit disorder, a condition associated with impulsivity, hyperactivity, and decreased attention. It is also used to treat narcolepsy, a condition associated with excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden sleep attacks.

Methylphenidate works by increasing the levels of certain natural substances in the brain that control attention and focus.

Methylphenidate HCl Doses

Methylphenidate is available in various dosage forms and strengths, for example, 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg immediate release tablets and 10 mg and 20 mg extended release tablets.

The usual dose of the immediate release tablets for children 6 years of age and older is 5 mg by mouth twice a day before breakfast and lunch. This dose can be increased by 5-10 mg every week. The maximum recommended dose is 60 mg daily.

In adults, the average dose of methylphenidate immediate release tablets is 20-30 mg daily given in 2-3 divided doses and taken 30-45 minutes before meals. The maximum recommended dose in adults is 60 mg daily.
