How To Use Metoclopramide (Reglan)

Metoclopramide comes in the form of an oral tablet, orally disintegrating tablet, oral solution, nasal spray, and injectable solution. Metoclopramide is usually taken 4 times per day on an empty stomach, half an hour before each meal and at bedtime. When metoclopramide is given for the treatment of GERD symptoms, it might be used less frequently, particularly when symptoms are observed only at certain times of the day.

Measure medicine in liquid form carefully. Use a medicine dropper or syringe to measure the exact dose of the metoclopramide oral solution. 

If you are using the metoclopramide orally disintegrating tablet, make sure you open the foil pack with dry hands. Open the pack just before taking the medicine. If the tablet breaks or crumbles, you should dispose of it and use a new tablet from the package. Immediately place the tablet on your tongue and allow it to dissolve. It usually dissolves in a minute, and you can swallow it with saliva. Do not crush or chew the orally disintegrating tablet. 

The injection form of the medication is given into a vein or muscle by a healthcare professional.

You should not take two different forms of metoclopramide (such as tablets and oral syrup) at the same time.

Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully and use metoclopramide exactly as directed. Do not take a higher or lower dose of this medicine or take it more or less frequently than your doctor prescribes.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of metoclopramide, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store metoclopramide at controlled room temperature (between 20°C - 25°C  or 68°F- 77°F) away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused metoclopramide should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw metoclopramide in the trash or flush it down the toilet.
