Midodrine Uses

Midodrine is used to treat low blood pressure that occurs with a change in position from sitting or lying to standing (this is called orthostatic hypotension). This medicine is only prescribed to people who have lifestyle-limiting low blood pressure that has not responded to other treatments such as support stockings. Midodrine should only be taken when you are upright in a sitting or standing position. It can cause a significant increase in blood pressure in the supine (lying down) position.

There may be other uses of midodrine—your pharmacist or health care professional can give you further drug information.

Midodrine Mechanism of Action

Midodrine works by tightening blood vessels, which leads to increased blood pressure.

Midodrine Doses

Midodrine is available as 2.5 mg, 5 mg, and 10 mg tablets. The recommended dose is 10 mg three times a day during the daytime with the doses spaced 3-4 hours apart. For example, you may take the first dose in the morning upon awakening, the second dose at midday, and the third dose before your evening meal, no later than 6 pm and at least 4 hours before bedtime.
