What are the risks of taking MiraLAX?

MiraLAX can cause severe health problems, especially in certain high-risk patients. Some of the risks of MiraLAX therapy include:

  • BOWEL OBSTRUCTION: Stop taking MiraLAX and contact your healthcare provider if you notice rectal bleeding or are unable to have a bowel movement after taking MiraLAX. These could be signs of a more serious problem.

  • CONTRAINDICATIONS: If you have irritable bowel syndrome with symptoms such as stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting, or have had sudden changes in your bowel movements in the last 2 weeks, talk to your healthcare professional before starting MiraLAX to make sure there is nothing more serious going on.

If you are at a high risk of side effects or complications from MiraLAX use, your doctor or pharmacist can offer alternative laxative tablets, stool softeners, or fiber supplements to relieve constipation or help clear your system naturally.

What should I tell my doctor before starting MiraLAX?

Tell your healthcare provider if you ever had an allergic reaction to MiraLAX, any of the active or inactive ingredients in MiraLAX, or any other drugs. Your pharmacy can give you a list of ingredients.

Give your healthcare provider a complete medical history. MiraLAX may not be right for people with certain medical conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, bowel obstruction, and kidney disease.

Give your doctor a complete list of all your medications, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, dietary supplements, herbal products, and other laxatives. This can help avoid serious interactions between MiraLAX and your other medications.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, could be pregnant, plan to get pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

What precautions should I take while on MiraLAX?

Keep all appointments with your healthcare providers.

Do not take MiraLAX for more than 7 days without talking to a doctor.

Eat high-fiber foods, drink plenty of clear liquids, and exercise regularly.

Call your doctor if you become pregnant while taking MiraLAX.

What drugs can interact with MiraLAX?

Taking MiraLAX with certain medications may affect how both medications work. Interactions between medications can also increase the risk of serious adverse reactions. Give your healthcare professionals a complete list of your medications, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, dietary supplements, and herbal products. Also tell your health care provider if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs because some of these substances can cause serious health complications when used with medications.
