How To Use Mirapex

Mirapex comes in the form of a regular (immediate release) tablet and an extended release tablet. For Parkinson disease, take Mirapex regular tablets 3 times a day and extended release tablets once a day at the prescribed dose. For restless legs, take the regular tablet once a day, 2-3 hours before bedtime. You can take Mirapex with or without food, but taking it with food may prevent nausea.

Read the prescription label and patient information leaflet. Take your medication regularly. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully regarding dosing. Your health care professional will begin treatment with a low dose of Mirapex and gradually increase the dose. It may take a few weeks for you to reach a maintenance dose. Do not change the dose or dosing frequency without your doctor’s approval.

Do not cut, crush, or chew Mirapex extended-release tablets.

Mirapex can relieve symptoms of Parkinson disease and restless legs, but it does not cure these conditions. Keep taking the medicine even if your symptoms are well controlled. Do not stop taking your medicine suddenly. A rapid dose reduction can cause severe withdrawal symptoms. Your healthcare provider will tell you how to lower the dose gradually. Potential withdrawal symptoms include fever, muscle stiffness, pain, sweating, confusion, fatigue, apathy, anxiety, depression, and sleep problems. 

If you have stopped taking Mirapex, don’t restart the medicine at the same daily dose without talking to your health care professional. Your provider may want you to start at a lower dose again.

Missed dose: If you forget a dose of Mirapex, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose. If you miss several days of Mirapex for Parkinson’s disease, talk to your doctor before restarting the medicine. You may need to start at a lower dose and gradually increase the dose again. If you miss a dose of Mirapex for restless legs, skip the missed dose and take the next dose the next day before bedtime.

Storage: Store Mirapex at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused Mirapex should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw Mirapex in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded Mirapex is through a medicine take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
