How To Use Misoprostol (Cytotec)

Misoprostol comes in the form of a tablet to take by mouth four times a day with food.

Read the prescription label and patient information leaflet carefully and use misoprostol exactly as recommended to prevent serious ulcer complications. Do not change the dose, dosage frequency, or duration of treatment without talking to your doctor.

You need to take the medication regularly for it to protect against gastric ulcers.

Women of childbearing age should test negative for pregnancy within the past 2 weeks, use effective birth control, and wait until the second or third day after their menstrual period before starting misoprostol (this is to ensure they are not pregnant). Taking misoprostol during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, preterm labor, and birth defects in the baby.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of misoprostol, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store misoprostol at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused misoprostol should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw misoprostol in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to properly discard expired or unneeded misoprostol is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
