Misoprostol (Cytotec) Side Effects

Possible side effects of misoprostol are listed below. Call your doctor for medical advice if the side effects are severe or persist after about a week.

  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Upset stomach
  • Indigestion
  • Constipation
  • Gas
  • Headache 

Some of the adverse effects of misoprostol are more serious. Call your doctor right away or seek emergency medical help if you develop the following serious symptoms:

  • Severe ongoing stomach discomfort
  • Blood in vomit
  • Blood in stool (black or tarry stools)

Misoprostol Overdose: In case of an overdose, call your doctor immediately. You can also call your local poison control center, provincial poison control center, or the national poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If someone has lost consciousness, collapsed, stopped breathing, or had a seizure, call 911.
